Cakes for the Kiddies!

Today's blog post is featuring some of our recent cakes that we created for children-related events. From birthday parties to Christenings, baby showers to gender reveal parties, every cake was so much fun to make and we hope just as much fun to eat! First up are three birthday cakes. Each one is so different but we loved each and every one of them! We love doing children's birthday cakes because we can use tons of bright colours and lots of adorable little decorations. The first cake is a second birthday cake for a lucky little boy who LOVES trucks. We made his first birthday cake last year (a super cute dump truck!) so this year we went with a construction truck, filled to the brim with chocolate brownies. We also included an adorable little fondant moose, who may or may not have stolen a bite of brownie ;) The second cake was for a Cookie Monster themed first birthday party. And, of course, you can't have a cookie monster cake without fresh baked chocolate ch...

Little Bit of Everything!

So it looks like we've been slacking with our blog posts again! We must be into the busy wedding and party season :). We've had a VERY busy few weeks with some super fun (and delicious) results! First, we'll start with all of the fun party cakes that we've been making recently. First up, Bubble Guppies! Now we have to admit, before this order, we had absolutely no clue who or what the Bubble Guppies were. Luckily after doing some research, we were excited to find out that they were super cute ocean characters. We couldn't wait to get started making all of the fun characters and decorations to go with this theme! For this party we made Bubble Guppies cake pops, cupcakes and of course, a cake! We made this lucky two-year old's first birthday cake a year ago and couldn't believe that it had been a year already! We hope she liked her special birthday treats and can't wait for her third birthday! :) Next up was a retirement cake for a local fireman. An...

Tinkerbell and Baby Showers!

We've said it before, but we LOVE making treats for children's parties! It's so much fun getting to incorporate our own twist on to the theme of the party. And when that theme is Tinkerbell, we get to bring out the super bright colours, glitter, and of course...magic! We had so much fun with this first party. It was for a first birthday party. The proud mom chose cupcakes for the occasion which meant we got to come up with all kinds of fun designs! For Tinkerbell we of course had to tie in the mischievous little fairy herself. We also created some sparkly magic wands, dainty little flowers and butterflies, glittery stars and of course, her cute little pom-pommed shoes! We started with our lemon cupcakes and chocolate cupcakes and covered them all in our deliciously sweet vanilla buttercream, tinted in all of Tinkerbell's favourite colours. Then we added on all of our magical little decorations and voila! Tinkerbell cupcakes ready for the birthday girl! Our ...

Black and White and Bling!

It was another cupcake wedding at Sugarbird last weekend! And this one was pure elegance and glamour :). The couple was going with a black and white theme, complete with glittery, sparkly rhinestone accents. So of course we had to make the cupcakes match as perfectly as possible :). We started with the top of the cupcake tower, which was a small cake for the ceremonial cake cutting. The flavour choice for this was chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream. A favourite for the groom! We went with a classic white fondant, and then stenciled on a black damask pattern out of icing. We used a black ribbon and some gorgeous rhinestones and finished it off with some black and white flowers on top. Very classy :) Then it was on to the cupcakes! The couple chose three different flavours for their treats. First up was our famous banana cupcakes with a delicious fudgy chocolate buttercream. Next up was our classic red velvet and cream cheese, and last but certainly not least, our lemon...

Festive Cupcakes!

We've been making A LOT of cupcakes lately!! Which is fine with us since there's usually extras for us to snack on afterwards... ;) First up was an order for some Christmas themed cupcakes for an annual Christmas party. We decided to do red velvet cupcakes with our delicious cream cheese icing. To go with the Christmas theme, we added a festive red stripe to the icing and topped them all off with some holly leaves and berries. We were thrilled with the way they turned out and can't wait to use this striped decorating technique on other themes throughout the year! Next up were some 50th birthday cupcakes. These were our famous carrot cake recipe with cream cheese icing and we decided on a gold theme to go with the holiday season! We made some gold ball lined stars with '50' on them, and finished off the decorations with some different sized gold dragees on top of the icing. We also made some mini cupcakes for a quick little bite :) We think they turned ou...

Mmm, cupcakes!!

We decided to experiment with some new, super easy cupcake flavours today! For our customers, we ALWAYS bake everything from scratch, but for home cooking, we LOVE trying out different versions of the classic cake mix cupcake. Today we tried one that we just had to share with everyone. It doesn't get much easier than this!! You wouldn't believe how moist the cream soda makes the cake. You really need to try it to believe it! Chocolate Cream Soda Cupcakes (or cake!) with Cookies and Cream Chocolate Frosting 1 pkg chocolate fudge cake mix (plus all required ingredients to prepare cake) 1 can cream soda 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 1 can prepared chocolate frosting 5 oreos, finely crushed 24 full oreos Prepare chocolate cake mix according to directions. However, substitute cream soda for any water that the recipe calls for. Bake cake or cupcakes according to baking times on box. This recipe works best with jumbo cupcakes. In a saucepan, whisk sugar and water together unti...

Cakes and Cupcakes and Cake Pops! Oh My!

It was another busy weekend at Sugarbird! Wedding season is in full swing and we were excited to to not only be making the wedding couple's cake pop favours, but also their cupcake wedding display! First stop, cake pops! These little guys are small, but actually take quite a bit of preparation. The end product is a perfect delicious little ball of cake on a stick! We started by creating a whole bunch of these little cake bites (205 to be exact!), then got to work dipping them in chocolate and covering them in decorations. We went with pink and white to match the wedding colour scheme. After they were all dipped, it was wrapping time! Every cake pop was wrapped in an individual bag and tied with a ribbon. Luckily for us we enlisted some help to give us a hand with the wrapping process!  Then it was off to the reception where they were placed on each person's plate :) But it didn't end there! Also on the menu were 100 cupcakes, plus a small cake for the officia...
